Some cities you visit. Oaxaca you taste.
Mole that takes three days and thirty ingredients. Tlayudas the size of a steering wheel, charring over wood. Mezcal poured by the person who grew the agave, roasted it in the ground, and crushed it with a stone wheel a donkey pulls in a circle. Streets the color of marigolds and Talavera tile. A church — Santo Domingo — so gold inside it looks lit from within.
This is the city other food cities quietly worship.
And this week it's $135 round trip.
THE DEAL
Tijuana (TIJ) → Oaxaca (OAX) $135 round trip · Viva · 1 stop · December SAVE 67% — and this is the real thing. Google flags the route Low for December, with usual fares running $235 all the way up to $740. Their words: "Anything less is considered a deal." $135 isn't less. It's a landslide.
Three date sets open right now:
Fri, Dec 4 → Sat, Dec 12 — $135 (SAVE 67%)
Mon, Dec 14 → Wed, Dec 23 — $189 (SAVE 54%)
Fri, Dec 26 → Fri, Jan 1 — $200, nonstop, 4 hrs (SAVE 51%)
One honest note: the $135 fare routes through one stop and runs long (~18 hrs of travel). If you'd rather go door-to-door, the nonstop is just 4 hours — and even over New Year's it's only $200. Same magic city. Pick your trade-off.
The cross-border part: This flies out of Tijuana, not San Diego. For us that's a feature, not a catch — walk across the CBX bridge straight from the San Diego side into the TIJ terminal, no Mexico-side scramble. Thousands of San Diegans fly this way for exactly these fares.
Why December is the play
Forget what you've heard about October — Día de Muertos is the famous one, but December is Oaxaca's quiet masterpiece. Christmas posadas wind through the streets. Markets stack tangerines and buñuelos. And on December 23rd the city throws Noche de los Rábanos — the Night of the Radishes — where artisans carve enormous radishes into nativity scenes and dragons. Yes, radishes. It's wonderful and it's real and it's only here.
A $135 fare to a destination Google itself calls Low does not sit still. This is the kind of price that's gone before the weekend.
If "real Mexico, not the resort version" has been on your list — it just went on sale.
Link note: This opens the live Google Flights search for the route — readers see the current fare the moment they click, so the price they book is always accurate even if the number shifts between now and click-time.
