Last Saturday we checked this exact route and it came back typical: $291. Not a deal — just the going rate. Nothing to say about it.

This week we checked again. $207 roundtrip, Google LOW, 50% off.

💸 The number, and why it's the number

San Diego to Maui dropped to $207 roundtrip on Alaska Airlines this week. Google's own tracker puts the normal floor for this route at $275, climbing as high as $790 — this fare sits $68 under the floor, the kind of gap that earns the LOW tag outright, not a marginal one.

Alaska. Nonstop. Seven hours. No connections, no layover math — San Diego to Maui in a straight line, and still the cheapest number this route has produced since it debuted as our very first Saturday Roundup Spotlight back in May.

That's not a typo. Maui hasn't led an issue since May 2nd. Almost five months of sitting quietly at "typical" while we sent you Tokyo and Rome and Lisbon and Denver — and then, without warning, it just broke.

🌺 Why December, and what a week here actually feels like

December Maui skips the crowds that pack the island every summer and the rain that shows up most winters on the other Hawaiian islands — this side of the chain stays comparatively dry, the trade winds keep the heat honest in the mid-70s to low-80s, and the whales start showing up offshore by the middle of the month, which is its own reason to book a window seat on the way in.

Day one is the drive up to Haleakalā before sunrise, standing above a sea of clouds at 10,000 feet while the sky turns the kind of colors that don't photograph the way you remember them. Day two is snorkeling the reef at Molokini, a sunken volcanic crater a few miles offshore where the water runs so clear it feels like an exaggeration. By day four you've found the waterfall pool nobody warned you about on the Road to Hana, and you're not telling anyone which mile marker it's at.

Against the top of the range — $790 — this fare keeps you $583 before you've spent a dollar on the ground. That's a snorkel charter, a sunrise tour up the volcano, and enough left over that you stop doing the math on the second poke bowl.

⚡ Why this fare moves fast

Alaska Airlines. Nonstop. Seven hours gate to gate.

Clean routing, no caveats, no asterisk — which is exactly why a floor-break like this doesn't sit still. Two windows are live this week: the headline Dec 6–15 at $207 (50% off) and a slightly later Dec 13–22 at $217 (48% off, same nonstop Alaska routing).

We watched this route sit at $291 for a full week. There's no rule that says it stays broken.

Book it before someday becomes never.

🔥 Honorable Mentions

🎰 Las Vegas — $48 RT (SAVE 48%) · Dec 5–12 · Frontier, NONSTOP, 2 hr We sent this route 10 days ago at $53. It's now $48 — a genuine further drop. Nonstop, nothing to plan around. Basic-economy fare, so bags and seat selection cost extra.

🌉 San Francisco — $38 RT (SAVE 71%) · Jan 16–23 · Frontier, NONSTOP, 2 hr This was our Spotlight three weeks ago at $52. It just fell again — $38, a new record low for this route. Same basic-economy note applies.

🎡 Minneapolis — $151 RT (SAVE 25%) · Jan 23–30 · Frontier, 1 stop, 16 hr We've come close to sending this one twice and passed both times because it wasn't quite a real drop. This week it finally is. One stop, 16 hours; a nonstop Sun Country option exists at $238 (4 hr) if the extra $87 buys back enough time to matter.

🚗 Detroit — $189 RT (SAVE 24%) · Jan 23–30 · Frontier, 1 stop, 16 hr First time this route has actually earned a spot in this newsletter. One stop, 16 hours; a nonstop Delta option exists at $559 (5 hr) — a steep $370 premium, mentioned for the record, not recommended.

📋 One last note on what isn't here

Thin week outside of Maui, and we're not going to dress it up. Rome dipped another dollar or two off last week's $627 Spotlight — not enough of a further drop to lead with the same destination two roundups running, so we rested it. New Delhi came back with the exact same price and save percentage it ran at back on August 8th — a rerun wearing a new date, not a new deal, so it's out. Everything else that crossed the floor this week — Boston, Honolulu, Kauai, Manila, Beijing, Cebu City, Cancún — already ran in Wednesday's issue.

Paris, Rome (Dec window), Milan, Lisbon, Venice, Dublin, Athens, London, and Amsterdam all came back typical. Guadalajara, Sydney, and Barcelona had real numbers but ran too recently to justify another appearance.
