Ten weeks of Southeast Asia fares have come across this desk tagged typical. Hanoi at $1,022. Bangkok at $980. Ho Chi Minh City at $942. Every one of them technically bookable and none of them worth your attention.

This week Hanoi broke.

$917 roundtrip from San Diego. Under a floor that Google says starts at $1,000. Nine hundred seventeen dollars buys Vietnam, or it doesn't.

Google's own 12-month data says the cheapest San Diego → Hanoi flights normally run $1,000 to $1,550. That's the floor to ceiling. Anything under a thousand is flagged as a deal automatically.

This fare is $917 — eighty-three dollars beneath the bottom of the range, and $633 under the top of it.

Say the routing part again, out loud: two stops, twenty-six hours. That is a real cost and we're not going to bury it under a photo of a lake. You are trading a full day of your life each direction for a fare that is $633 below what this route can charge you. Some people will take that trade without blinking. Some won't. Both answers are correct — but you should get to make the call with the actual number in front of you.

Not Ho Chi Minh City. That's the other one — glass towers, motorbike swarms, the money.

Hanoi is a thousand years older and moves at a completely different frequency. The Old Quarter is thirty-six streets, each one historically named for the single trade sold on it — Silk Street, Tin Street, Herb Street — and most of them still sell roughly that. The buildings are tall and impossibly narrow because the French taxed by street frontage, so the whole city grew upward and backward instead of sideways.

You wake at six because the city does. Old men playing cờ tướng on the sidewalk. Women in conical hats stacking pomelos. A woman with a cart making phở bò the way her mother did, in a broth that started simmering yesterday afternoon, for about two dollars.

Egg coffee. Cà phê trứng — egg yolk whipped with condensed milk into something between a custard and a cloud, poured over Vietnamese coffee so black it's structural. Invented here in 1946 when milk was scarce. There is nothing else like it on earth and every café serves it.

Bún chả on a blue plastic stool eighteen inches off the ground: grilled pork patties in a warm fish-sauce broth, cold rice noodles, a mountain of herbs. Anthony Bourdain ate it here with a sitting U.S. president and the restaurant has never once let anyone forget it.

And then the part nobody expects — Hanoi is a base, not a destination. Ninh Bình's limestone karsts rise out of flooded rice paddies two hours south. Hạ Long Bay is two and a half hours east. The Sapa rice terraces are an overnight train north. You can put four completely different landscapes in one week without ever booking another flight.

Northern Vietnam runs a real winter — and late February is the seam where it ends.

Temperatures sit in the low 60s to low 70s. Not the 95°F wall of humidity that makes Hanoi in July an endurance sport. You can walk the Old Quarter for six hours and not need a shirt change.

There's mist. We're not going to pretend otherwise — northern Vietnam in February gets a fine silver drizzle the locals call mưa phùn, and some mornings the sky is flat pewter. Here's the thing: that mist is the postcard. Hoan Kiem Lake at 6am under low fog, the red Huc Bridge floating in it, tai chi practitioners moving in slow lines along the water — that's the image everyone comes home with. Blue-sky Hanoi is the less interesting Hanoi.

And the timing detail that makes this specific window work: Lunar New Year 2027 falls on February 6. Tết is the single busiest, most expensive, most shuttered week in Vietnam — families travel home, businesses close for days, fares spike. Your Feb 25 departure lands nearly three weeks after it ends. The country is open, the decorations are still up, the peach blossoms are still on the streets, and the prices have already collapsed.

That's not luck. That's the calendar doing you a favor exactly once a year.

A sub-$1,000 Hanoi fare from San Diego is not a standing offer. Google has been tagging this route typical for ten straight weeks — the last time it crossed our desk it was $1,022 with no discount tag at all.

Two-stop award-space inventory on Alaska + Cathay is finite. When the seats behind this fare sell, the price does not step up gently — it returns to the $1,000–1,550 band without an announcement and without a warning email.
